Welcome to Ontario’s South Coast
It’s never too soon to plan your next ride. So think about riding along Ontario’s South Coast. Our new 2013 Cruise the Coast Motorcycle Map shows you the rider-approved routes and biker-friendly stops linking places such as Port Maitland, Port Dover, Long Point, Port Stanley, Wheatley and Point Pelee. The new map freshens up our previous map with Haldimand, Norfolk, Elgin and Chatham-Kent, and adds two more areas: Windsor-Essex and Oxford County. Stay connected all year long via twitter/ontsouthcoast and facebook/cruisethecoast. Thanks to our partners at Southwestern Ontario Tourism, Westmont Hospitality, and our local connections, we can offer solid information for you to plan an excellent ride. Cruise the Coast Motorcycle Maps are available at tourist information centres or by contacting one of our Alliance partners. They will also be distributed at the Canadian Motorcycle Supershow in Toronto.

Coastline cruising Spec writer Gary Curtis takes us on a cruise along the shores of Lake Erie from Port Maitland to Port Burwell, a summer stretch he’s frequented for the past 40 years CHOOSE YOUR RIDE: Ontario’s southern coast seems made for motorcycle travel — there are twisties, turns and ups-and-downs galore — and these bikes are perfect for the trek: The first thing you must do when motorcycling Ontario’s Riviera is to get the heck out of town. And there’s no better way to do that than with Lake Ontario fully in view. Pritchard Road on the far east-end of Hamilton Mountain affords a lovely view down the Red Hill Valley, across the lake and to the cold, distant towers of Toronto. It’s a favourite way in and out of Hamilton. And where is my 1100 cc 1998 Yamaha Virago taking me? Somewhere along the lovely, sandy northern edge of Lake Erie, possibly a hidden beach with an iPod full of blues and decent beach reading. Lake Ontario is cold and rock-strewn, inhospitable, and I live in dread of the 70-foot-long mutagenic, metal-sludge-eating tapeworms that are said to repose in the sediment at Windermere Basin. But Lake Ontario is […]

2013 Map hot off the press
Our new map is HOT off the press. Sure, you can download our award-winning map, but then you miss out on all its cool features. The “real” map is laminated to repel water, a cool idea suggested by one of our biker friends. Plus, it folds up to just the right size so you can zip it in your pocket. You can thank another biker for that idea. Request an original map to be mailed by contacting one of the Ontario’s South Coast Alliance Partners.

‘Ride safe!’ warns Insurance Bureau of Canada
The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has issued safety tips for motorcycle riders venturing to Friday the 13th in Port Dover, as well as to anyone riding this season. The Port Dover run “is not for people who have little or no experience in group or highway riding. Make sure you are ready for it.” That was the warning from Steve Kee, IBC’s Director of Media and Digital Communications, who is a rider, himself, and made the trek to Port Dover. “Riding a motorcycle requires skill, control and a different level of focus than when driving a car – for example, knowing how to brake safely while leaning into a turn,” Kee added. Motorcycle sales are up, which means new riders on the road this summer. Here are some tips from IBC for a safe “Friday the 13th” and riding season : Get professional training Maintain your bike Dress for the fall, not the ride Wear bright colours or reflective material to make you more visible to motorists. Stay sharp. Keep your eyes moving and do frequent shoulder checks. Scan the road surface ahead of you. Mind the gap. Leave an adequate gap between you and the car in front of you. Be seen. Always signal lane changes and position yourself […]
